Earthwatch Institute is an international environmental organization that engages people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. Our research programme focuses on climate change, the sustainable management of resources, oceans and communities in order to better understand critical environmental issues and inform and influence local agendas.
The HSBC Climate Partnership is an exciting programme with HSBC Bank and several international NGOs, furthering our strong experience of partnerships. This global programme aims to reduce the impacts of Climate Change on people and their livelihoods, by promoting action in some of the world's major cities, river basins and ecosystems. Earthwatch's role in this partnership is to immerse field programme participants in experiential learning while supporting the investigation of climate change impacts on forest ecosystems, including the links to anthropogenic disturbance.
Under a five year funded programme, the Earthwatch Institute has established regional climate centres in the following countries: UK, USA, Brazil, India and China. These centres provide the base for the research programme which aims to engage HSBC employees and communities surrounding the centres in understanding and action on climate change. In addition, these regional climate centres provide the environment for HSBC staff to develop knowledge and skills to champion change in their work and personal environments.
Prior to joining a field research project at a regional climate centre, HSBC employees have the opportunity to learn via an online programme and volunteer locally on climate change community projects. After the field research experience, these employees also have the opportunity to work as a ‘champion' within the bank to support environmental activity across the organization.
