Warbler watchers soon could be bringing more tourism dollars to Camden County.


The walking and biking trail near the Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center has been named to the North Carolina Birding Trail system, a statewide program intended to take advantage of the increasing interest and economic benefits of bird-watching .

The Dismal Swamp State Park, planned for 14,344 acres just across the canal from the Welcome Center, also will be part of the birding trail there.

The Camden site combines with Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo and national wildlife refuges at Mackay Island, Currituck’s northern Outer Banks, Pea Island and Lake Mattamuskeet to make up trails in the northeastern corner with species that draw bird-watchers from all over the world, said Salinda Daley, coordinator for the North Carolina Birding Trail.

On the Camden trail, birders can see species such as the bald eagle, the belted kingfisher and Swainson’s warbler, Daley said.

The program is planned to eventually include more than 50 sites from the mountains to the coast marked with signs, Daley said.

Six agencies began gathering potential sites on the coast last spring with plans to publish a hard-copy book with maps of the trail in the spring, Daley said. The program began based on the success of a birding trail established in Texas in 1993. An economic study done at the Texas site in 1999 showed that the average visiting birder spent a total of about one month during the year on the trail and spent about $4,000 locally.

About 46 million Americans participate in bird-watching, and 18 million of them traveled out of state for their hobby, according to a study by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. North Carolina has a worldwide reputation for good birding, Daley said. The state sits at the southern end of breeding territories and the northern end of winter ranges, and it draws a wide variety of bird species, she said.

“We can make this an economic boon for coastal communities,” she said, “and this way you don’t have to cut down a forest to do it.”

Tourism already is one of the largest industries in North Carolina, with 49 million people visiting the state in 2004 and spending a total of more than $13 billion, according to statistics from the North Carolina Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development.

The agencies involved in the bird trails project include the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, North Carolina State Parks, North Carolina Cooperative Extension, North Carolina Sea Grant, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Audubon Society of North Carolina.

The site for the new state park at the Great Dismal Swamp , Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge have been designated as Important Bird Areas by the Audubon Society of North Carolina.
